I had to figure out how exactly this worked in 1982, when I borrowed my roomate's sewing maschine, which he used primarily as a coffee table, and had to thread it and get it to work so that I could make medieval garb for an SCA event.I thought that it was neat at the time, but I had since forgotten it.
I still think tht it is neat.
